Lumbar Disc Rejuvenation Q & A

What is lumbar disc rejuvenation?

When you’re experiencing pain that originates in your lower back, Dr. Vengurlekar may recommend lumbar disc rejuvenation to relieve your discomfort. These minimally invasive therapies often focus on treating swelling, inflammation, and nerve pain caused by issues like:

  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Sacroiliac joint pain

There are several different types of lumbar disc rejuvenation procedures, including discography, injections, and radiofrequency neurotomy.

What is lumbar discography?

Lumbar discography is also known as discogram. Dr. Vengurlekar uses this procedure to help identify which of your discs are causing your pain.

During lumbar discography, you receive a mild sedative and lie face down. After numbing the treatment site, Dr. Vengurlekar uses a special X-ray called a fluoroscope to guide a needle into the disc believed to be causing pain. Once in place, he injects a contrast dye. This dye works to increase the pressure in your disc. If you experience pain, it can confirm disease or damage in your disc.

While your lumbar discography is underway, Dr. Vengurlekar also captures images of your discs to look for any issues.

What are lumbar injections?

Dr. Vengurlekar offers several different types of lumbar injections, including epidural steroid injections, transforaminal epidural steroid injections, and sympathetic blocks.

Epidural steroid injections

These injections rely on steroid medication to reduce swelling and inflammation originating in your lower back.

Transforaminal epidural steroid injections

This type of lumbar injection uses steroid-anesthetic medications injected in your lower back to reduce inflammation and swelling of irritated nerves.

Sympathetic blocks

A lumbar sympathetic block uses medications to numb branches of nerves in your lower back. Sometimes, a series of injections is needed to treat the problem.

What is radiofrequency neurotomy?

Radiofrequency neurotomy, or radiofrequency rhizotomy, uses heat to disrupt nerve signals from painful facet joints.

During this minimally invasive procedure, you lie face down after receiving a mild sedative to help you relax. Dr. Vengurlekar numbs the treatment site of your back before inserting a thin, hollow tube known as a cannula into the affected area using X-ray guidance known as fluoroscopy.

Once in place, Dr. Vengurlekar inserts an electrode through the cannula and delivers a weak electrical jolt. If this jolt re-creates your pain without causing other reactions, it confirms proper placement. Then, Dr. Vengurlekar can administer higher levels of heat to the nerve to disrupt pain signals.
